175 Congressional Leaders Call for Immediate Investigation of Mifepristone Safety, Urge Reinstatement of In-Person Dispensing Requirements
WASHINGTON, D.C. — 175 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives sent a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Martin Makary calling for an immediate investigation into the serious health risks associated with the abortion drug, mifepristone, and urging the reinstatement of in-person dispensing requirements that were removed during the Biden administration.
The letter cites Restoration of America Foundation’s groundbreaking study revealing that serious adverse events from mifepristone are approximately 22 times more frequent than currently recognized by the FDA. According to the study, 10.93 percent of women—more than one in ten patients—experience sepsis, infection, hemorrhaging, or another serious or life-threatening adverse event following a mifepristone abortion.
The Members of Congress expressed particular concern about the Biden administration’s decision in 2023 to permanently remove the in-person dispensing requirement from the drug’s Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS), creating what they describe as a “no-contact, mail-order abortion scheme.” This change allows abortion drugs to be sent through the mail without important medical consultation and oversight, even to states where abortion is illegal.
Recent polling from McLaughlin and Associates shows that 7 in 10 voters agree it “makes sense” to bring back the safety standards that were removed by the Biden FDA.
With abortion drugs now accounting for nearly two-thirds of all abortions in the United States—over 600,000 annually—the Members urged HHS and FDA leadership to immediately reinstate the REMS requiring in-person dispensing of mifepristone and to expedite the promised FDA review into the dangers of abortion drugs.
“This is common sense – we shouldn’t be sending a dangerous drug across America without an in-person doctor’s visit,” said Doug Truax, founder of Restoration of America Foundation. “The health and safety of women is at stake. We need to get this fixed immediately.” Contact: Brian Finnegan, ATHOS PR, (631) 374-7181, media@ffroa.com
